Wendy, this post is fantastic! If only I had seen it about a month earlier when I was planning my son's 2nd birthday party.

We went with a train theme but my MIL made him a train cake, as shown in my Snuggle Bug's 2nd birthday party post.

Honestly, had I seen your tutorial in time, I might have been tempted to make your Thomas the Tank Engine cake instead.

    Great work!

By the way, the photos on your blog are breath taking!

Fantastic cake Wendy. I think the solution to your 'wheel dilemma' is that you actually only see half the wheels, the top half is hidden by the body of the engine. The wheels can therefore be twice the size.
I'm trying to do a Toby the Tram Engine for my son Toby's second birthday and your tutorial has been inspirational - thanks!

Wendy - You have just made me the happiest woman in the world. My son, Ryan, is autistic and he's going to be 15 in a couple of weeks. His all time favorite thing in the world is Thomas the Tank Engine so I am thrilled to find this amazingly detailed set of instructions on making a Thomas cake. I'm going to start now so that I can work on the cake while Ryan is at school. I can't thank you enough for this tutorial.

Amazing!! You have been incredibly helpful! I will let you know how it goes. I am not going to attempt making one as large as you did, but I am making the fondant face, which should be an adventure!!

    Spectacular!

Wow.. u really set the bar up high for a thomas train. Originally i had thought of just using a sheet cake and carving out the face and just a frontal veiw.. but after seeing this. my cake would be nothing. His grandmother usually does the cakes but since we moved from oh to ga, she wont b able to. Ive never made n e decorative cake so if this works (which from ur step by step.. i might b able to accomplish..lol)i would b sooo proud. Thanks 4 the great insperation!

Just found your post this morning as I was searching the internet for Thomas cake ideas. I have been asked to create a cake for a 5-year old's birthday next month. I am so impressed with your decorating skills. The Thomas face was done perfectly. I may try to follow your intructions instead of just using a paper cut out pasted on the front of my cake. Thank you so much for sharing this. You have saved me so much time and energy trying to figure all this out on my own.

I'm trying to work out how to do a Gordon cake, and you've been an inspiration.

I used your tutorial and made this cake for my 2 year old's birthday. It turned out great. I did make one change, though, I used an old vegetable can (cleaned first, of course) and baked some cake in it to use for the rounded part of Thomas behind his face. It worked well and cut down on the extra cutting/waste. Thanks for the tutorial!

Thank you for the great tutorial Wendy! I am going to make this cake for my son's very important first birthday and would like to know if I can use gum paste instead of fondant for Thomas' face? If no why not (out of curiosity).

    Thank you again!

    Wendy said...

Deb, You can use gumpaste instead of fondant, but I usually don't because it dries too fast for my taste. :o) If it's something you're accustomed to using, I'm sure you'll be fine. I'm not sure it it will hold to the cookie stick as well as fondant, but maybe it won't matter since gravity should keep the face on/around the stick?
    Good luck to you!!

Awesome Cake! Just wish mine had turned out 1/2 as good. I guess that super moist is not a good choice as mine was WAY too delicate. Really sucks as I wanted to make this for my Son for his B-day before I deployed. Guess Ill just end up with a regular cake...again, great job!

I bought the wilton 3d train pan and used it for a thomas cake a few months ago. Then a client asked for the exact cake, but smaller on a train track on a round cake. I thought "uh oh" then I found a link to your tutorial. You saved the day! Thanks so much for posting the instructions.
